Saudade is the language school I wish anyone new to Portugal could find. Dora, her partner Estefânia, and their exceptional teachers make learning Portuguese language and culture fun, flexible, and effective. During our six-week stay, Saudade tailored lessons for our whole family to maximize our learning in the time we had, including individual, couple and family lessons. We worked with three teachers who were each excellent. Saudade understood our long-term goal of real proficiency, and created not an in person and a distance plan so we can achieve our Portuguese language goals. We feel like we’ve gained friends, not just knowledge - and we got invaluable insight into other pieces of Portuguese life including school selection and family life too. We feel so lucky to have found Dora and her team!! Saudade is true gem among language options with a lot of respect from people who know the language school landscape here. It’s also a Portuguese woman-owned business, now growing with a second location.

In January of this year, I moved to Lisbon for a research stay with very limited knowledge of Portuguese. Before arriving, I reached out to the Saudade team, and they were incredibly welcoming from the start. A week after my arrival, I began a 4-week beginner course. Thanks to the school’s monthly courses and my background with languages similar to Portuguese, I quickly advanced to a higher level. The flexibility to move up as you progress made it easy to advance at my own pace, even within group classes. Over the next five months, I had the pleasure of being taught by Marta across three different groups. Her exceptional teaching was crucial to my progress. The learning environment at Saudade was both stimulating and enjoyable, and the dedication of the staff significantly impacted my development. With the goal of passing the B2 exam before returning to Barcelona in August, I frequently requested additional homework and materials from Marta, and she was always ready to provide them. We even had a few private lessons to address my weaker areas. I’m proud to share that I passed the B2 exam (DIPLE) with excellent marks. This success has motivated me to prepare for the C1 exam in November. Saudade made my progress from a beginner to an advanced level possible in such a short time. In addition to the language classes, the school hosts monthly events that immerse students in Portuguese culture. I attended a live fado concert, a guided tour of Mouraria, and a tile-painting workshop at the Museu do Azulejo. I thoroughly enjoyed each of these activities and wished I had more time to participate in even more of them! Thank you, Escola Saudade, for everything! I've attended 2wks intensive beginners Portuguese course. School is easy to find and access. Very welcoming staff. My teacher Susana kept the classes easy to follow, she was very patient and ready to help anytime. Class had light, funny and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended!

I absolutely loved learning at Saudade Language school! I completed my level C1 here and 100% recommend this school to beginners and advanced learners of Portuguese. The teachers were all so kind, and integrated me so well into the classes - with no judgement at all. With being born in South Africa and having Portuguese parents, my background in Portuguese is mostly just listening and understanding. The teachers at Saudade Language school gave me the confidence to speak, read and write and compared to other schools I attended I definitely recommend this school above all others! It’s like a small little family. I am now much more confident with my Portuguese and can I say I still use many of the things they taught in my day- to- day life. I had a great experience with Saudade with my family. The teachers are super attentive, conscientious and informed, we all definitely took a step up in our level of Portuguese after our course. The arrangements are also really great, we were all different levels but the school managed to accommodate us and change things as the course developed. The location of the school is in a great neighbourhood with a nice ambience. Above all everybody’s attitude was super nice, welcoming, patient and positive.
